Marc Benioff & Shaun Tai
Marc Russell Benioff (born September 25, 1964) is an American internet entrepreneur, author and philanthropist. He is the founder, chairman and CEO of salesforce.com, a cloud computing company. As of February 2015, he owns approximately $3 billion worth of Salesforce shares, although the company has never reported a profit. Benioff started salesforce.com in March 1999 in a rented San Francisco apartment and defined its mission as The End of Software®. He is “credited with turning the software industry on its head” by using the Internet to “revamp the way software programs are designed and distributed.” He has long evangelized software as a service as the model that would replace traditional enterprise software. He is the creator of the term “platform as a service” and has extended salesforce.com’s reach by allowing customers to build their own applications on the company’s architecture, or in the salesforce.com “cloud.” He is the author of three books, including the national best seller Behind the Cloud. He currently serves on the board of Cisco Systems.
Benioff pioneered the 1/1/1 integrated philanthropic model, by which companies contribute 1 percent of profits, 1 percent of equity, and 1 percent of employee hours back to the communities it serves. Parts of this 1/1/1 model have been adopted by many other companies, including Google. In 2005, the members of the World Economic Forum named him as one of its Young Global Leaders. In 2007 the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy presented Benioff with the Excellence in Corporate Philanthropy Award and in 2008 invited him to become a director of the board.
In June 2010, Marc Benioff and his wife Lynne Krilich announced a $100 million gift to UCSF Children’s Hospital with the goal of not only seeing the new hospital built but significantly advancing children’s health worldwide. In 2010, Benioff and his wife were named one of the Top 25 Most Effective Philanthropists by Barron’s.
In 2014, Marc Benioff donated another $100 million to UCSF and Oakland Children’s Hospital (both now called Benioff Children’s Hospitals). Benioff credits Mata Amritanandamayi with inspiring his philanthropic business models, stating “But the most pivotal meeting for me was with Mata Amritanandamayi, … It was she who introduced me to the idea, and possibility, of giving back to the world while pursing my career ambitions. I realized that I didn’t have to make a choice between doing business and doing good. I could align these two values and strive to succeed at both simultaneously.”

Remember Steve Jobs
Drawing from some of the most pivotal points in his life, Steve Jobs, chief executive officer and co-founder of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, urged graduates to pursue their dreams and see the opportunities in life’s setbacks — including death itself — at the university’s 114th Commencement on June 12, 2005.

http://www.socialdatalab.com/ – The SD Lab acts as a hub connecting key players in the social data landscape. It serves as a resource for cutting-edge social data companies, such as Facebook, for other consumer-oriented companies eager to realize the untapped power of data, as well as for Stanford students and faculty. The Lab meets regularly to prepare for the quarterly Social Data Summit, the key event that brings together all members of the Lab.
Inspire Chinatown, VIA & Shaun Tai
August 3, 2011 — Oakland, CA — Oakland Digital (ODALC) is working with Stanford University’s Volunteers in Asia (VIA) Program to facilitate a volunteer project in Oakland Chinatown conducted by university students from Hong Kong, Japan, and Taiwan. This student group will be conducting surveys of small businesses and restaurant owners in the Oakland Chinatown area as well as the neighboring areas August 12-17.
The purpose of these surveys is to gauge the owners’ technological proficiency and comfort level with utilizing the Internet for business purposes, as well as formulating a consensus on the needs and technological deficiencies that the local commercial community has. The surveys will also see which businesses are interested in utilizing a system of security cameras, and what are the reasons prevent these businesses from already installing one. ODALC’s goal is to empower economically disadvantaged communities with Internet education and digital literacy classes.
Located at the edge of Chinatown in downtown Oakland, ODALC is working to help the community flourish through technology, innovation and cross-cultural collaboration. In addition to their Inspire Oakland program, ODALC hosts technology classes for low-income small business owners, presents digital media symposiums, and conducts its annual Inspiration Awards, honoring leaders in technology and community building.

Dr. Andreas Weigend & Shaun Tai
“Hi there, I am Andreas Weigend. My expertise is the future of big data, social-mobile technologies, and consumer behavior. I study people and the data they create. In today’s increasingly digitized world, consumers share data in unprecedented ways. This Social Data Revolution represents a deep shift in how people make purchasing and lifestyle choices.
I advise companies that want to embrace this new reality of social data. Together, we design interactive platforms and real-time systems that empower them and their customers to make better decisions. As Amazon’s chief scientist, I helped create the firm’s data strategy and customer-centric culture.
I teach at Stanford University and UC Berkeley, direct the Social Data Lab, and speak at corporate events and top conferences around the globe. I received my Ph.D. in Physics from Stanford University after studying in Germany and Cambridge, UK. I live in San Francisco and Shanghai.”
