Pro Football Hall of Famer Barry Sanders and Shaun Tai

Barry Sanders (born July 16, 1968) is a former American football running back. He played professionally for the Detroit Lions of the National Football League (NFL). A Pro Bowl invitee in each of his ten NFL seasons and two-time NFL Offensive Player of the Year, Sanders led the league in rushing yards four times and established himself as one of the most elusive runners in pro football with his quickness and agility.

In 2007, he was ranked by NFL Network’s NFL Top 10 series as the most elusive runner in NFL history, and also topped its list of greatest players never to play in a Super Bowl. He is often regarded as one of the greatest running backs in NFL history.

Sanders played college football for the Oklahoma State Cowboys football team, where, as a junior in 1988 he compiled what is considered one of the greatest individual seasons in college football history, rushing for 2,850 yards and 42 touchdowns in 12 games. He was awarded the Heisman Trophy as the most outstanding college player in the nation and was unanimously recognized as an All-American. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003.

Sanders joined the Lions in 1989 and had an immediate impact, winning the NFL’s Rookie of the Year award. Through ten seasons in Detroit, he averaged over 1,500 rushing yards per season and just under 100 rushing yards per game. In 1997, he became the third player to rush for over 2,000 yards in a season and was named the NFL Most Valuable Player.

Still seemingly in his prime, Sanders unexpectedly retired from football after the 1998 season, 1,457 yards short of breaking the NFL’s all-time rushing record. His number 20 jersey was retired by the Lions, and he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004.

On November 8, 2016, Michael Tubbs was elected to serve as the mayor of the City of Stockton, California. Upon taking office in January 2017, Michael Tubbs became both Stockton’s youngest mayor and the city’s first African-American mayor. Michael Tubbs is also the youngest mayor in the history of the country representing a city with a population of over 100,000 residents.

Mayor Michael Tubbs has secured over $20 million in philanthropic capital to launch the Stockton Scholars, a place-based scholarship that aims to triple the number of Stockton students entering and graduating from college. Mayor Tubbs also brought Advance Peace to Stockton, a data-driven program that works to reduce gun violence in communities. Additionally, with an innovative public-private partnership supported by a $1,000,000 seed grant from the Economic Security Project, Tubbs launched the nation’s first municipal level basic income pilot, the Stockton Economic Empowerment Demonstration.

Before becoming mayor, Michael Tubbs served as Stockton’s District 6 City Councilmember. Elected at age 22 in 2013, he became one of the youngest City Councilmembers in the country. As a councilmember, Tubbs created the Reinvent South Stockton Coalition, championed the creation of the City’s Office of Violence Prevention and was part of the council that led the city out of bankruptcy as Chair of the Audit and Legislative Committee.

Mayor Tubbs graduated in 2012 from Stanford University with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree with honors. Tubbs has been a college course instructor for Aspire Public Schools and a Fellow at the Stanford Institute of Design and the Emerson Collective. Michael is a Stockton native and product of Stockton public schools.

Introducing Cal State East Bay’s 40 Under 40 Awards

The university prepares to honor 40 alumni at an inaugural ceremony April 28

An Emmy-winning newscast producer. A world-renowned composer. The minister of agriculture of a foreign country. They’re just a few of Cal State East Bay’s inaugural 40 Under 40 Alumni Award recipients, who will be honored by the university Friday, April 28 at Lake Chalet restaurant in Oakland. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. and includes a cocktail reception followed by the awards presentation.

“Cal State East Bay produces many talented young alumni who make substantial contributions to their communities and professions,” said Richard Watters, executive director of alumni and constituent engagement. “Our 40 Under 40 recipients are great role models for the university’s current students, and shining examples of how Cal State East Bay helps elevate the region and the state.”

Award honorees encompass Cal State East Bay alumni from all colleges and career paths, including educational leaders, entrepreneurs, social justice advocates, tech and marketing gurus, health care professionals and civil servants. While many universities in the area claim the same successes among their alumni, according to Jennifer Case, president of the Alumni Association, the achievements of Cal State East Bay graduates frequently hold deeper meaning and greater value, both for the individuals and those who helped them along the way.

“We know that many Pioneer alumni are first-generation college students and most worked their way through college with at least one job, sometimes two or three,” Case said. “Our alumni often persevere through challenging situations to complete their degrees and support their families and communities. Knowing that [these honorees] are age 40 or under, we look forward with excitement to see what’s next on the horizon.”

Shaun Tai (B.A. ’02, Digital Art), Executive Director, Oakland Digital Arts & Literacy Center

Tai is the executive director of Oakland Digital, which he co-founded in 2009. He dedicates himself to enhancing tech literacy and opportunity among entrepreneurs and students. Tai also leads the direction and product strategy for BRIDGEGOOD, a web application that connects early stage creatives to professional opportunities. The platform is funded by Google.org and the Golden State Warriors Community Foundation. In 2015, he was named Cal State East Bay’s Distinguished Young Alumnus of the Year.

Marc Russell Benioff (born September 25, 1964) is an American internet entrepreneur, author and philanthropist. He is the founder, chairman and CEO of salesforce.com, a cloud computing company. As of February 2015, he owns approximately $3 billion worth of Salesforce shares, although the company has never reported a profit. Benioff started salesforce.com in March 1999 in a rented San Francisco apartment and defined its mission as The End of Software®. He is “credited with turning the software industry on its head” by using the Internet to “revamp the way software programs are designed and distributed.” He has long evangelized software as a service as the model that would replace traditional enterprise software. He is the creator of the term “platform as a service” and has extended salesforce.com’s reach by allowing customers to build their own applications on the company’s architecture, or in the salesforce.com “cloud.” He is the author of three books, including the national best seller Behind the Cloud. He currently serves on the board of Cisco Systems.

Benioff pioneered the 1/1/1 integrated philanthropic model, by which companies contribute 1 percent of profits, 1 percent of equity, and 1 percent of employee hours back to the communities it serves. Parts of this 1/1/1 model have been adopted by many other companies, including Google. In 2005, the members of the World Economic Forum named him as one of its Young Global Leaders. In 2007 the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy presented Benioff with the Excellence in Corporate Philanthropy Award and in 2008 invited him to become a director of the board.

In June 2010, Marc Benioff and his wife Lynne Krilich announced a $100 million gift to UCSF Children’s Hospital with the goal of not only seeing the new hospital built but significantly advancing children’s health worldwide. In 2010, Benioff and his wife were named one of the Top 25 Most Effective Philanthropists by Barron’s.

In 2014, Marc Benioff donated another $100 million to UCSF and Oakland Children’s Hospital (both now called Benioff Children’s Hospitals). Benioff credits Mata Amritanandamayi with inspiring his philanthropic business models, stating “But the most pivotal meeting for me was with Mata Amritanandamayi, … It was she who introduced me to the idea, and possibility, of giving back to the world while pursing my career ambitions. I realized that I didn’t have to make a choice between doing business and doing good. I could align these two values and strive to succeed at both simultaneously.”
